Rehabilitation of Greenpoint Avenue Bridge over Newtown Creek

The project involved the removal of the deteriorated roadway and sidewalk deck in the bascule span of the bridge.  The decks were replaced with a grid deck filled with pre-cast concrete.  Select stringers and diaphragms were also replaced.

A full work platform was installed beneath the bridge, and the bridge was maintained in a balanced position throughout the life of the job.  Roadway traffic was maintained on this key artery connecting Brooklyn and Queens, while marine traffic was shut down for 2 six week periods to facilitate the staged construction.

This project will extend the service life of the span deck by 50 years.
