South Ferry Terminal Project

The South Ferry Terminal Project is a milestone for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and subway riders for several reasons. It is the first new subway station built in New York in almost 20 years. The President of MTA Capital Construction, Dr. Michael Horodniceanu, described it as "our first 21st century station" with new innovations, including a fire alarm system connected to a ventilation system that cools the entire station.

The new station is reducing customer travel times, providing additional station entrances with disability accessibility, and offering a new free transfer between the 1 line and the R and W lines at Whitehall Street. Judlau furnished and installed all materials and equipment for over 1,600 feet of new track leading to a new South Ferry Terminal Station. This included all new power, signals, communications, tunnel lighting, rails and ties, and ventilation. At the southern end of the structure, Judlau outfitted the new South Ferry Terminal with new station lighting, plumbing, floor and wall tiles, artwork, AC and exhaust systems, seven escalators, two elevators, token booths, and all materials needed for an exemplary subway station.

Some of the innovations include:

• A fan plant within the battery fan plant which can function independently
• Multiple ADA accessible entrances as well as seven escalators and two elevators
• Modern finishes consisting of 2,500 sq. feet of glass, 300 sq. feet of mosaic, and an art fence and historical wall constructed from 400 sq. feet of stainless steel
• This is the first station in the US with low vibration tracks, and an integrated HVAC system

In September 2009, Judlau Contracting received a "Best of 2009" award from New York Construction magazine. The South Ferry Terminal Project is the Project of the Year in the Transportation category. The magazine, which covers New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, extended its competition to New England this year.
